Martin Zubimendi transfer alternatives could provide Liverpool FFP boost (2024)

Liverpool are working on a deal to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as their first arrival of the summer. The Spanish international has emerged as a key target as Arne Slot looks to strengthen his team before the start of the new season.

Richard Hughes, the Liverpool sporting director, is in negotiations with the La Liga club over the structure of the deal. Zubimendi does have a £51 million release clause in his contract, but it has been claimed that the clause requires the payment to be made in full to be activated.

However, the ECHO understands that claims that Liverpool are willing to include one or more players as part of the final agreement is not the case. But if an agreement can’t be reached, then the Reds will have to move on to alternative targets, and with that in mind, we have taken a look at who could be on their list, with three of the four potentially providing a financial boost to the Anfield club.

Joris Chotard

Despite being just 22 years old, Chotard has made 151 appearances in Ligue 1. He currently plays for French side Montpellier and has two years remaining on his contract.

His main position is defensive midfield, but he can also operate in a more advanced central midfield position. Last year saw him make 32 appearances in all competitions, and he featured for France in the Olympic games, helping them to reach the gold medal match where they lost to Spain after extra time.

There have been some reports this summer that Rennes have been in talks over a potential move for the midfielder. According to Transfermarkt, he is valued at around €10 million (£8.6m), and could be a cheaper alternative for Liverpool.

Javi Guerra

Another young player who has become a regular for his club. Last season saw Guerra play 40 times in all competitions for Valencia. His main position was in central midfield and he scored four times and provided one assist.

The 21-year-old has three years remaining on his contract with Valencia and has been heavily linked with a £21.4 million move to Atletico Madrid this summer. However, it was reported earlier this week by The Athletic that Valencia pulled the plug on the deal after Atletico failed to meet a deadline. That could therefore open the door for Liverpool to make their move.

Morten Frendrup

Liverpool have been linked with an interest in the 23-year-old this summer, after an impressive season in Serie A with Genoa. It was reported that the Reds had even submitted a bid worth €25 million (£21m).

Frendrup is seen as a key member of the squad for Genoa, so convincing them to sell may not be easy. He played a total of 39 times in all competitions last season, showing his versatility by playing in defensive midfield, central midfield and even on the left or right on certain occasions, scoring twice and providing six assists.

The Danish international has four years remaining on his current deal, which puts Genoa in a strong negotiating position.

Joao Gomez

Keeping things closer to home, if Liverpool want to opt for a player with Premier League experience, then they could take a look at Wolves’ Joao Gomez. He was a standout player for Gary O’Neil’s side last season and was effective in the defensive midfield role.

One problem that Liverpool could have if they wish to make a move for the Brazilian is Wolves’ stance. Having cashed in on Pedro Neto, who is close to completing a £65 million move to Chelsea, the Premier League side are unlikely to want to lose another big player and will demand a huge fee if they do. There is also reported interest from Manchester United.
